A city in southern Germany inaugurated the first chapel for say goodbye to the country’s mascots. This funeral home in the small city district of Albstadt will offer owners the opportunity to give religious services to their furry friends.
The animal funeral service SME Schönhalde Tierbestattung bought an empty Protestant church in July. Since then, the place was renovated to provide a spiritual space for the pets’ final goodbye.
With increasing awareness about pet well-being, people are looking for more respectful and meaningful ways to say goodbye to their companion animals. Pet burial offers a way to do so in a more personalized and commemorative way.

The chapel, known as the Pfeffingen Pauluskirche, is officially disconnected from any specific religion. This church was built in 1955 by the Evangelical Methodist parish of Albstadt.
“Schönhalde Tierbestattung guarantees that in the future the doors of the Pauluskirche will remain open to everyone and will do everything possible to accommodate all people and animals,” the company said in a statement.
Pet burial services have diversified in recent years. This includes the possibility of choosing between individual or collective burials, cremation, the choice of memorial urns and the organization of farewell ceremonies. For example, in Mexico there are services such as Funeral Pet and Bye Bye Friend by J. García López to say goodbye to pets.
